Driven to Succeed: NJIT and WOS provide pathways to meaningful careers

 

Up late one night, perusing Craigslist for job opportunities, Shaliyah Ali came across an ad for the Talent Acquisition Pipeline (TAP), a Workforce Opportunity Services (WOS) work-study program offering a stipend, free IT training at NJIT and job placement at Prudential Financial, Inc.

“It sounded too good to be true,” admits the 26-year-old mother of two. “I figured it would be flagged as spam and removed in the morning.” But when she checked back the next day, the ad was still posted. “I stared at the screen and said, ‘You know what? I’m going to give this a shot.’”

WOS, a nonprofit organization founded by Columbia University professor Dr. Art Langer, has aligned with NJIT and other universities across the country to pave the way to permanent, meaningful employment in high-tech fields for individuals from underserved communities...
