WOS Launches Learning Center in Detroit, Orletta Caldwell to Lead

Detroit, MI: Workforce Opportunity Services (WOS)—the leading non-profit organization geared towards aligning individuals from underrepresented groups with transformative career opportunities—is expanding its impact as a resource for individuals living in underserved communities through establishing a new learning center in Metro Detroit, Michigan.

The learning center—which is part of the organization’s “In the Community” program—was designed to level the playing field for individuals in Metro Detroit who face barriers to education and employment. Similar to the center that WOS established in New York in 2014—where we’ve served over 1,400 individuals and hosted over 100 workshops—the Detroit-based center will collaborate with other organizations and institutions to offer free workshops for individuals from underserved populations on topics that include the following:

  • Business writing essentials
  • Time management
  • Goal setting
  • Job search and interview tips
  • Navigating career changes
  • Professionalism in the workplace

Orletta Caldwell, a Detroit native who has over 30 years of administrative and leadership experience, will serve as the coordinator and instructor of the new learning center; overseeing all of its operations. Over the course of her career, she has held positions at Josten’s Inc., Camp Baber, and Grand Rapids Community College.

“Workforce Opportunity Services takes a practical, yet innovative approach to developing early-career individuals and veterans in efforts to prepare them for the 21st-century work habits,” said Caldwell. “The learning center will enhance the transformation that Detroit is currently undergoing and will provide young people with the tools and habits that they need to truly participate in the transformation to further the city, which might not have happened otherwise.  These skills will provide the participants with not only jobs but the seeds to transform their communities.”
